So we took Morey trick-or-treating last night in Waimea. I've always liked the Hawaiian interpretation of mainland culture (like the way Christmas, for example, has its own unique twist here). When I was a kid, I remember trick-or-treating in the snow a few times. Always walking up to a house and ringing the doorbell.
But here, in local neighborhoods, many families take the opportunity to sit out in their garage or carport to "talk story" with friends over drinks (or even dinner) as they pass out candy to the kids. Of course, here in Waimea, even though we drove to another neighborhood, Kirsten, Morey and I couldn't go more than two or three houses without running into an old friend or co-worker.
Another "Only in Hawaii" moment: instead of candy, some people give out packs of saimin (dried noodles first invented in Hawaii's plantation era). Morey's favorite saimin flavor is chicken, which comes in orange wrapping. When Morey saw that she was getting saimin in blue wrapping (some other flavor), she asked the local Hawaiian lady matter-of-factly, "Do you have any orange ones?"
It was pretty funny. Guess you had to be there.
